Definition of Work:
The Mental Health and Addictions Social Worker is a clinical position resulting from the recommendations of the Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Additions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador. The Action Plan identifies a number of initiatives as a part of a Stepped Care Approach to Mental Health and Addictions Services throughout the province.
In keeping with the Stepped Care Approach to Mental Health and Addictions Services, this regional position will be responsible for providing professional standards of psychiatric Social Work interventions for individuals presenting to the ER with mental health and/or addictions concerns. Regional services to ER departments will be accommodated through telephone consultations and the use of Telehealth as required.
Part of the functioning of this position is the planning and implementation of a Mobile Crisis Response (Memphis Model) Team. A Mobile Crisis Response (MCR) team is a collaborative approach in which police and mental health and addictions professionals work together in responding to mental health and addictions crisis in the community. Once the team is established in Central Health, the Social Worker will participate as a member of the crisis intervention team in provision of appropriate interventions in mental health and addictions crisis situations through the utilization of community base mental health and addictions approaches. The successful candidate will work closely with the RCMP in the implementation stages and in the ongoing operation of the team/service.
The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements. This position will work closely with the Psychiatric Nurse I, who will work a corresponding shift in James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre, Gander.
The successful candidate will exercise a significant degree of independent clinical judgement, quick decision making and the ability to assess and intervene competently in various clinical scenarios including crisis situations. Clinical services include, but are not limited to, mental health and addictions assessment, treatment and intervention in collaboration with the Emergency Room team, the Mental Health and Addictions team, the Department of Psychiatry and other members of an Interdisciplinary team.
The dual role of this position includes membership on the MCR team and provision of Mental Health Services in the ER. This involves assessment, treatment, follow up and support of individuals with mental health and addictions needs throughout various mental health and addictions programs and services.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor of Social Work Degree.
* Current registration with NLCSW.
* 2 years current experience (within the last 5 years) in an addictions and/or mental health setting.
* Demonstrated knowledge of best Practice Standards, as it relates to assessment, treatment, planning, counselling and evaluation.
* Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Person and Family Centred Care and the delivery of services.
* Demonstrated analytical, as well as, oral and written communication skills.
* Demonstrated independence, initiative and ability to work with others.
* Demonstrated high level of self-awareness.
* A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class IV Driver's License and the use of a private vehicle are conditions of employment.
* Consistent demonstration of Central Health's corporate values; Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Stewardship and Quality
* Satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position.
* A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority.
Preferred qualifications:
* A Master's Degree in Social Work.
* Completion of the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention course with current certification.
* Demonstrated knowledge of the DSM-5.
* Completion of the 5 Person Restraint module and Acute Pharmacological Intervention for mental health emergencies.
* Proven proficiency with computer systems such as CRMS and Meditech.

75 hours bi-weekly (Shift work may be required)
